Poetic Justice

The
multidisciplinary project Distributive Justice participated at the
8th Istanbul Biennale from September 20 to November
16, 2003. The theme of the Biennale was “Poetic Justice”
and selected by curator Dan Cameron, senior curator
at the New Museum of Contemporary Art (New York, USA) from 1995.
Eighty-five artists from 42 countries were presented. Visitors were
given the chance to participate in all segments of the project (installation
in the Biennale space and via the project’s Internet pages)
and in the discussion with philosophers on the theme “Do we
want equality, and if so, which kind?”
During
the project’s stay in Istanbul, it was further enriched by
two new texts prepared for the project:
“SCIENCE AND ITS DISCONTENT”
by author Gürol Irzik (Department of Philosophy, Bogaziçi
University Istanbul) and “DISTRIBUTION OF CHANCES
FOR SOCIAL AFFIRMATION” an
interview with Tara Hopkins, coordinator of The Civic Involvement
Projects at Sabanci University in Istanbul, Turkey. The interview
was conducted by Ömür Kula, and prepared by Momo Kuzmanovic.
The
project’s participation at the Biennale was made possible
by Mrs. Neda Druskovic Young (Korcula/USA) and
the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Croatia.
Discussion:
At
Saturday, September 20, 2003, a disussion with philosophers was
held in the working space of the exhibition.
The topic was: “Do we want equality, and if so,
which kind?”
