Gallery of Extended Media:
Solo exhibition

The first overall solo exhibition of the Distributive Justice project took place at the Gallery of Extended Media in Zagreb from April 25 - May 6, 2003
<BACK

The presentation included all the project elements introduced at previous exhibitions (including the Biennial of Young Artists - BigTorino in Italy in April and May 2002, and Documenta11 held in Kassel, Germany from June 25 - September 15, 2002). The exhibition space of the project in the Gallery of Extended Media was also organized as a "social laboratory" divided into 6 points. By following the signs in the space, visitors were included in various activities tied in with the theme of the project: just distribution of common goods in society. Some of these elements could be followed (and developed) on the Internet, and some in the real space of the exhibit itself. The method of installing the project in its entirety is described here in more detail.

Publications
For the exhibition in Zagreb we published posters, catalogue and new (print and online) editions of the newsletter in Croatian and English. The catalogue gives an insight of the project development since April 2003. The newsletter contains brief reports from previous project presentations, articles and interviews exploring various aspects of the position of underprivileged groups in the distribution of common goods in the society. Online versions of the newsletter on Croatian and English are available here.

Discussions
Two discussions about philosophical and sociological concepts of the just distribution in society were held in the working space of the exhibition:

1. On Monday April 28th a discussion on the topic "A Life Without a Welfare State" was conducted by sociologists Nino ˇganec, PhD from the Croatian Ministry of Work and Social Care, and Mr. Darko Oracic from the Croatian Employment Bureau. During the discussion arguments were presented emphasizing the weakness of the welfare state concept (Oracic) and those emphasizing advantages of the same concept (ˇganec). Visitors to the exhibition participated in the discussion. The event was facilitated by Mr. Neven Petrovic, a philosopher from Zagreb.

2. On Wednesday April 30th the discussion topic was "Welfare State: Philosophical Arguments - pro et contra". ˇarko Puhovski, PhD - philosophy professor from the University of Zagreb, Mr. Neven Petrovic, philosopher from Zagreb, and Mr. Elvio Baccarini, philosophy professor from the University of Rijeka, introduced various philosophical approaches to distributive justice in society: in the philosophy of Karl Marx (Puhovski); in the modern philosophy of ethics (Baccarini); and in the recent philosophy of political liberalism (Petrovic). Visitors to the exhibition expressed their opinions and raised several questions about the topic.
